Valve calls the event Steam Next Fest in English. It runs three times a year and focuses on upcoming, unreleased games that will have a publicly playable demo.

Where to find the free demos

The most direct route is the official Steam Next Fest page on the Steam Store. Before the event opens, the hub mainly works as a coming-soon page. Once the event starts, it organizes the participating games and demos.

Valve's documentation explains that a public demo can appear in two main ways: as a download button on the full game's store page or on a separate demo store page. In either case, the demo is free.

  1. Open the official Steam Next Fest hub.
  2. Choose a genre, category, or tag related to the kind of game you want.
  3. Open the page for a title that interests you.
  4. Look for the option to download or play the demo on the game page or the dedicated demo page.
  5. After trying it, add the full game to your wishlist if you want to follow its release.

How to use filters, genres, and tags

The exact organization of the hub can change from one edition to another. Valve says, however, that it uses the primary genres selected by developers and Steam Tags to sort titles within Next Fest. The most efficient way to narrow a large demo list is therefore to start with a broad genre and then refine it with more specific tags or features.

In practice, someone looking for a particular style can combine interests such as RPG, strategy, horror, building, co-op, or other tags shown in the hub. The order of tabs, game placement, and groupings may look different when the event opens, so early screenshots or lists should not be treated as the final October layout.

What the wishlist is for

A wishlist is useful for keeping track of a game after its demo is no longer prominently featured. According to Steamworks documentation, users who keep a game on their wishlist can receive a notification when it releases and for certain discounts, depending on account notification preferences and Steam's notification rules.

A simple Next Fest routine is therefore to try the demo, open the full game's store page, and wishlist the titles you actually want to follow. The public event page itself encourages players to do this.

What can still change before October 19

The event date and time are confirmed, but the final list of visible demos can still change. Valve tells participating developers to make their demos live before 2:00 PM Brasília time on October 19 and allows them to opt out if their plans change. That means a demo announced before the festival may not be available at opening, while others may go live shortly before the event begins.

It is also not safe to assume that every demo will disappear when the event ends. Steam's demo documentation allows developers to publish, deactivate, and reactivate demos separately. The end of Next Fest closes the promotional hub for that edition, but the availability of each demo afterward depends on the game's developer or publisher.

Do not confuse the press preview with the public opening

The October edition documentation lists a press preview beginning on October 8 at 2:00 PM Brasília time. That milestone is aimed at the press and does not change the public Steam Next Fest opening, which remains scheduled for October 19 at 2:00 PM Brasília time.
